What have others, who don't have back pain anymore, done to try fix back pain?
Most people have back pain for a few weeks and then it goes away, but some people have terrible "chronic" pain and it never really gets better.
Good options to try for chronic back pain:
1. Dr. John Sarno's theories and books
2. EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique)
3. Diligently follow Dr. John Sarno's treatment exercises or similar exercises for a few weeks/months
4. Pete Egoscue's unusual posture exercises from his book “Pain Free”
5. Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy self-treatment
7. Physical Therapy
9. Detox/Food Elimination
10. Back Surgery
JOHN SARNO THEORIES AND BOOKS
Dr. Sarno wrote the books
“Healing Back Pain” (210 pages, 1991) and “The Mindbody Prescription” (208 pages, 1999)
“There is a small army of people out there who have gotten totally better just by reading one of my books”
John Stossel of ABC's 20/20 and Howard Stern the radio show host were both patients of Dr. Sarno and their chronic back pains went away after they became Sarno's pateints. Dr. Sarno was featured on 20/20 and Larry King Live in 1999.
Dr. Sarno testified about his success using a mindbody approach to treat back pain at a 1997 Congressional hearing before the House Appropriations Committee.
Here is a link to a 14-minute video of a 1999 ABC 20/20 TV segment all about Dr. Sarno:
Science writer Jonah Lehrer wrote a 2008 article about Sarno and back pain in Best Life Magazine. The article discusses Sarno as well as recent scientific evidence supporting the relationship between back pain and the mind:
“Dr. Sarno’s ability to make chronic pain disappear shouldn’t be dismissed as just another instance of the placebo effect....New testimonials appear every day, with people confessing that years of chronic pain ended as soon as they read one of Dr. Sarno’s books. They tell stories of expensive surgeries that didn’t help and scary spinal diagnoses that couldn’t be treated. And then, after years of suffering, they stumbled upon Dr. Sarno and they were saved.”
Many back pain sufferers get offended by Dr. Sarno because they naturally but wrongly assume that Dr. Sarno is implying that there is something inherently wrong with them and that he is saying that their back pain is "all in their head" and just a hallucination.
What he is really claiming is that the pain is real, but it is caused by conflicts in your mind, and your body would rather create real pain rather than deal with the mind conflicts.
